what do you do for abs?

personally, my squat has suffered because of my overall lack of core strength. i never had a problem with it while i was wrestling, but i'm seeing seriously negative results after neglecting my abs for 3+ years

Definitely want to train your abs hard. Traditional high rep stuff has good points, but you need to train abs heavy too. I usually start workouts with ab work. If I'm doing a big lift I'll go a little easier, and then train abs toward the end.

Everyone talks about the big lifts having super carryover to your abs (which is basically true), but you need to train them directly. Lately I've been doing leg raises, and incline situps with weight. My abs get hit all week too so I don't go too crazy with specific work, but you have to get it in.

Really any ab exercise that is weighted works well.

I do a lot of weighted planks and standing crunches.

do bicycles, leg raises, reverse crunches..

there are even ab and core exercises from the pushup position that work well but i cant even begin to remember what they are called

I toss a rope over a beam and pull my legs up to my chest. Seems to work for me, but you guys seem to be more pro litters, so this is probably worthless info.

Abs are a muscle, just like every other muscle in your body and you should train them as such.

p90x ab routine, look it up... it's great.

I imagine if I did this in my apartment I'd end up going through my floor.

no way, just make sure your motions are controlled. it will kill you at first (you may not even get through it the first time), but you'll learn to bear with it with enough practice.

that p90x ab routine is so easy.. my buddy was like dude, this is the hardest thing you will ever do so I was like cool and tried it out. I smashed that shit and was surprised at how easy it was.

then i made him try suspended weighted planks and he collapsed within 5 seconds of having the weight on his back and smashed face on a dumbell near by.

it's a good routine for someone who's not up to a certain level of abdominal strength, but now that i've been doing it again for a while it's gotten easy for me as well. maybe it's time i start doing some weighted ab stuff. deadlift, give me some recommendations for movements.

what's a good ab workout that will help me keep my waist? i'm not sure how to explain it but it seems like some women have over defined obliques and they look kinda square. i know i'm a long way off from that but i would cry if i lost my hourglass.

I think I used to work my abs accidentally when I would slam out mad sets on my Iron Man doorway pullup bar with multiple handles for amazing 4 way pullup action. I'd do forward facing grip pullups and bring my knees up to my stomach every time. This was a year or so ago, when I had to be a bit in shape to whip around big ass pieces of sheet metal onto the laser cutters.

if your lack of core strength is causing your squats to suck, you need to start doing heavy walkouts, or other support work. probably something like ten sets twice a week, adjust to personal taste. hanging leg raises and p90 x will not affect your squat in a positive manner.

I don't believe in doing an obscene amount of ab work, but I believe in doing abs at least 3 times a week.
Here a few of my staples.

i'm going to try standing crunches...kneeling crunches seem to hit my lower back instead of abs even if i'm using a low weight

Standing crunches are hard to do correctly... same as the kneeling crunches. You have to really concentrate on using nothing but your abs to move the weight. It's going to take a few tries to get them down right.
