Earlier this year, I wrote a web app to handle pay-what-you-want purchases for the Woe full-length in response to unauthorized downloading. The concept worked really well so I revamped the code and used it for The Green Evening Requiem, where it also worked well. After that, I started getting a lot of requests to purchase or use my code so I modified it even further. The public site launched this morning.

http://www.communitasmedia.com

Right now, Woe and Green Evening are still running off the old system (through subvertallmedia.com, another one of my sites) but we'll be moving over to this sometime in the next few days. Closed testing with others will begin soon after. If any of you guys wanna give it a shot and help me test it out, register on that page (hit the register link in the top right) and make sure to say that you were referred from me here.

Sorry for the sorta-spam. This could probably be in another forum but since I don't post in any but this one, the mods will hopefully make an exception for me.

We just take a small percentage of each sale and you get the rest. No registration fees, no recurring fees.

It's really up to you. I still have a little bit to do before I start letting people in. If you want to register, I'll send you a signup invitation as soon as the others go out and you can start using it whenever you want.

This sounds like a good idea, I'd like to look into it

Worked on it for something like 15 hours today. Started sending out invitations based on Alpha registration signups. Anyone looking to try it out should signup soon. The system should go live and allow sales in the next few days, I just have to finish up a few very small things.

Nice to hear it has worked out for you and you like how it works. Just outta curiosity, are there any minimums at all for the purchase to work out? And if so, do you get a lot of people who pay $5.00 or less? What's the division on purchases 5 and under, 6 to 10, and over 10?

I'm not sure what you mean by "work out" but in terms of "be profitable," I technically lose money on anything under $0.30. Overall, the average sale price is $5, so a few good ones will cancel out a big number of poor sales. With the Woe album, I had a lot of $1 or less sales after the press releases about the pay-what-you-want option went out, but those were less than you'd expect. The Green Evening Requiem, on the other hand, had fewer sales but their average price was higher, around $6.50 I think. Most people are very happy to support independent bands. We haven't started selling through the new system so I can't say how the option to attach merch to sales is going to play out, but I have high hopes.

Oh by work out, I just meant for the sale to go through. I'm all about this and think it's great for both sides here. Fans get what they want, and bands do too. I'd be more than happy to do this for every band. Hell, imagine if you had $100.00 and you put 5 bucks on each album you wanted....20 albums is pretty good for that. I like it because I also think it's good if you want to give something a chance and not risk spending $12 to $15 on something you'll end up hating.

Could you link us to your page for the purchases? Thanks!

That is exactly how I look at it!

We're still finishing up the purchase system, just need to pretty it up a bit and beat it up a bit before we start allowing sales. As soon as I have one working, I'll link it. In the meantime, the file/merch/artist managers are all working in basic forms for those with accounts so it's possible to get all your ducks in a row before we open the doors for sales.

We're ready to start testing before the end of the week and need people to use the system. If any of you guys wanna sell your shit through it, sign up! I don't anticipate any major bugs.

Alright, just giving this another bump. The service is 100% functional and people are starting to use it. Independent labels are actually showing the strongest response... Bindrune Recordings (www.bindrunerecordings.com) has already added it to their site and is putting up their entire catalog. If anyone wants to get involved, go on and register.
