'Carry The Torch: A Tribute To Kid Dynamite'

Review:
It was only a matter of time before Philadelphia Punk Legends, Kid Dynamite, received a tribute album. To make sure no stone was left unturned, Get Outta Town Records found a band to cover pretty much every single song Kid Dynamite ever record. I've never had the chance to hear most of the bands on this record but I'm thrilled to see that Kid Dynamite was able to inspire so many.

39 songs and the majority of them are complete clones of the original. A lot of the bands vocalists even do their best to recreate Jason Shevchenko's famous scratchy half scream/half singing style. While I progressed through the tracks a smile started to develop of my face. The old days of doing everything I could to walk across a sea of faces in order to grab the microphone for a chance to shout out one of the famous "whoa" parts that Kid Dynamite mastered. And the fact that this is a complete catalog tribute of the band I didn't have to hope to hear a specific song because chances are it was close to follow.

Now while I greatly enjoyed this nostalgia trip, not every song was pleasing to hear. For instance to of my favorite KD songs were ruined by a band trying to do a song their way. I never got why a band would do a cover and try to make it their own. I thought the point of the cover was to play the song the way it was meant to be played as a way of showing tribute to the original. Track 14's SOS done by First To Leave was turned into an acoustic track. It killed the good time the original was. Then on track 21, To The Lions turns Rid Of The Losers, Bring On The Cruisers into a traditional moshy type hardcore song. An equally bad mistake.

Being a fan of Kid Dynamite I fully appreciate this record. It is what it is. 39 bands each doing 1 song apiece from such an amazing band. If you are into that sort of thing and are a fan of Kid Dynamite this record may be right up your alley. If you aren't a fan of either you probably won't be into this record. I dig it and it's made me dust of Short, Faster, Louder and sing along as loud as I can.

Make Do and Mend, Comadre, Lewd Acts, The Ergs, and The Geeks all have covers on this tribute as well (as far as notable bands go...).

I was kind of bummed Shook Ones didn't do one.

Oh, whoops. Kevin Hare beat me with the copy and paste.
