Review:
Obituary has returned once again with their 8th full length album entitled, Darkest Day. It's their 3rd release since reuniting in 2005 and it's arguably their worst release to date.
Talk about uninspiring. This album seems like the band just kind of went through the motions. With the exception of the plethora of solos, a riff here and there, and the cover art, there really isn't much that this album has to bring to the table. The first track, List Of Dead, starts off fast and heavy. It's a lot more thrash than death metal and gave me the impression this CD might be a change into a positive direction for the band. Then I got to listen to the next 12 songs and became increasingly bored as the album progressed. Track 5's Payback is the only other song on the album that got my attention but even that was nothing to write home about. To simply put it, this album is dull.
It's a shame because Obituary had a lot of potential coming into the bands 2nd go-around. 2005's Frozen In Time sounded like the album that should have came out instead of Back From The Dead. Even Xecutioner's Revenge was a half decent album that had more good songs than bad. Seeing them play live shows with bands like Napalm Death, Merauder, and Unleashed, this album had all the potential to be great. I think maybe releasing the Tardy Bros. album may have hurt this Obituary release. I just might have to chalk this up to being burnt out after heavy recording and touring since the reunion.
This album is can be skipped over. It's unfortunate too because every time I hear Obituary is coming out with something new I get excited. This was a huge disappointment. Atleast I know that I won't have to hear a lot of these songs live since they tend to avoid overcrowding their setlist with newer material. They atleast know what the fans really want to hear.
Sad day indeed for a diehard Obituary fan like myself. I believe I'm going to have to pop in Slowly We Rot and do the slow headbang all day to remember the good old days, because they seem like they are quickly fading away.
