Review:
Anytime Suffocation releases new material you can pretty much guarantee that it's going to be the heaviest thing you hear all year. The bands newest release, Blood Oath is no exception. This actually is the heaviest thing they've done since reuniting back in 2003. Souls To Deny and the self-titled album were no slouches but this takes a massive dump on both of them in pure heaviness.

Although I prefer some albums more than others, Suffocation doesn't vary their style up from album to album. Pure heavy fucking death metal. With the exception of a few parts here and there, that reminds me of Morbid Angel, this is your standard Suffocation record. However they seem to have reached back to the Pierced From Within days for creative inspiration for this record. After a few listens, it's quite obvious that they were trying to recreate the glory days of the band. Effigy, Spawn, and Pierced all have countless amounts of punishing riffs that get stuck in my head for days. Blood Oath is already doing the same.

My man, Frank Mullen sounds like pure evil once again. I've long considered him one of the best death metal vocalists, if not the best. His ability to sound scary as hell, while remaining fairly clear in his pronunciation has always blown my mind. Although I can't say I know most of the words to this record, it seems Frankie boy has decided to leave out some of the less-than-stellar lyrics that appeared on the self-titled record like "SHUT UP! SHUP UP! YOOOOOUU!" I'm sure most of the record still has a lot to do with the hatred he has for his ex-wife.

For the 3rd time in the bands lifespan they have returned to Breeding The Spawn to re-record something. Marital Decimation gets new life as the albums final track. Hearing a great song that didn't have the best original production value, given the production it deserved is always a good thing. I like that the band didn't do a single thing to change it. Every single part is note for note a copy of the original only it sounds 10x's better.

If you happen to get your hands on one of the special releases you'll find yourself listening to either demo versions or instrumental versions of songs that appear on the album. To me, it's useless unless you plan on going on YouTube and making a fool of yourself by videotaping you doing the vocals for it. Oh wait that only happens for garbage like Waking The Cadaver.

If you are a fan of death metal or just all things heavy, this record is for you. Plan and simple.
