When I got this cd, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Reign Supreme... We had heard some teaser songs on their myspace, about 100 versions of 100 different songs due to the glory of all things internet, and very few new songs live. First thing I did when I copped the cd was take a look at the back... Ok, ok, 13 tracks. Then the layout... Damn, awesome theme behind it all (which you will see when you pick up the album). Then, I loaded the cd into the car. What happened next blew my damn head off my shoulders and I've been looking for it ever since. Long story short, this cd is so full of ridiculous riffs, a wide-range of emotions, and for once, a heaping helping of tracks we really haven't heard before, that I'm going to have to say that this is the cd to beat in 09. From start to finish, there is not one bad note that makes up one bad part that makes up one bad song. Yes, it is pretty much perfect, including the instrumental interlude we get later in the second half of the cd. From cd layout, to lyrics, to quality of recording, to the genuine heart-felt effort you can tell was poured into this cd, there isn't one bad thing to say.
We do get a handful of previously released tracks, completely re-recorded and brought up to the standards of the new material. Hearing those older songs at this quality is like hearing them for the first time. As for the new jams, I was completely surprised that Reign Supreme "still has it" and continues to churn out hit after hit without showing a sign of slowing down. I mentioned that there was an interlude, which there is, and it wouldn't have worked with any other band that I can think of except reign supreme. It is completely not what we're used to hearing from the band but fits perfectly right where it is and how it is. They've even re-written the end of a song that's been around for a while and changed the name... The old name escapes me at this moment, but when you get the cd make sure you listen to "to live and die in vain" and if you are familiar with reign supreme I'm sure you'll recognize it and agree, it was a nice surprise that worked well.
If you know reign supreme, you know what to expect when it comes to the sound of the band: retarded guitar riffs that don't give you a second to breathe and crush melody with mayhem... coupled with some of the catchiest, well-placed breaks in the game currently, backed by drums that sound like the end of the world is coming, a bass that really puts an ass-kicking to your ears, and unique, heart-felt, angry vocals that just won't let you think for a second that this isn't some real-ass shit. There are no exceptions on this release to what we've come to know and love from this band and it doesn't seem that there is an end in sight either.
Do you like hardcore? Are you one of those assholes that says "there's no good bands in hardcore anymore"? Do you just like heavy music? If the answer was yes to any of those questions, then you need to get the gps coordinates on a copy of this cd asap and home in on it. This is the best example of the year so far of a fresh, newer sound that pays tributes to it's roots without sounding like many others. Maybe you can pick out elements of some songs that remind of something else, but I highly doubt you can do that with the intensity and emotion put behind it all. Like I said, this to me is the cd to beat in 09, and if you don't pick it up you are either deaf or one of those weirdos who still only buys records like we were still in the 60's. Don't wait, cop this cd NOW!
