Review:
Straight Up! hails from phoenixville... A suburban town that is almost as sketchy as any part of a major city I've walked in... And that's pretty much how I would describe this band: a band that is fun to see, sing-along to, and is all-around about having fun but, deep down, has a fucked-up side and an angry core to them. This 5 song, self-released ep is a diamond in the rough you shouldn't ignore.
This an older style of hardcore... Not so much just crazy fast-beats that repeat over and over again, but it's more related to hardcore's roots in punk music than the hardcore we're mostly used to seeing today that takes influence from many metal acts. I'm not sayin there isn't maybe one double bass part in there, or that there isn't a breakdown in a couple songs... Cause there definitely is, but it fits without straying too far from the original idea. The songs flow seamlessly and tend to stick in your head; lots of gang vocals and lyrics that actually mean something (once you read the lyric sheet) instead of the brain-dead nonsense that were are, unfortunately, so very used to. Good hardcore with a real message... Isn't that what it's really all about? Seriously do yourself a favor and read the lyrics when listening to these songs. It'll make them that much better.
The recording is pretty decent and a little raw, which works in this band's favor... because if this cd was over-produced it would probably sound horrible and wouldn't go with the rest of what the band is seemingly all about. Everything's at a perfect level and Adam's vocal tone fits perfectly with rest of the sound the band is sending out.
All-in-all, this is an awesome 5 song jammer that will literally have you banging your head. The band is fairly new but is starting to play more and more shows, so i suggest as soon as possible that you check them out and pick this gem up from them... or if you're a lazy bag of flesh, head on over to their myspace (link below) and be sure to have one mailed to you.
