Review:
When Edison, New Jersey's aptly named Mongoloids initially burst onto the scene, I didn't really know how to take them. I saw them at a shitsplat bar in the middle of Trenton. The singer's voice seemed comical and cartoonish but was somehow appropriate and fit his eccentric onstage acrobatics. The band was relatively tight and energetic as well. All in all, they were a decent listen and fun to watch. When I heard them on record, I didn't like it. It was a classic case of "I guess you had to be there". After a while, I kept hearing good things about the Mongoloids' new material but never took the time to give it an honest listen until now.
'Assorted Music' is reminiscent of many different things in the hardcore Rolodex that is my brain. Firstly, every time I hear the Mongoloids' singer, I immediately think of Todd from Dysphoria. That goofy, Cookie Monster growl is very similar to Gravity's sound. You can choose for yourself whether he sounds more like Sesame Street's most lovable diabetic. I, for one, enjoy the fact that this guy sounds a little different and seems to experiment with his voice. It's kind of fun to hear....even if it does sound a little whacky at times.
Another thing you can easily hear in the Mongoloids' music is a heavy NYHC influence. It's apparent within the first few songs that these kids have listened to a good deal of Killing Time, Agnostic Front, LOA and probably Biohazard. That is not to say they are pumping out a paint-by-numbers replica of 'River Runs Red' or 'Happy Hour'. A lot of bands today are trying to sound like this but are failing miserably or not doing it as gracefully. The Mongoloids maintain a unique sound essentially devoid of the intentional copouts and ripoffs you hear in so many modern hardcore records.
Also, I'm probably going to get some opposing opinions about this, but some of the guitar work on this disc reminded me of Anthrax's less thrashy material. Fuck you if you don't hear it. I'm the best.
I would recommend this record to hardcore fans. It definitely turned around my initial reaction. These kids are doing something exceptionally out of the ordinary. If you're anything like me and already wrote this band off, give them another shot.
took me forever to get into this band....saw them multiple times before i enjoyed it....then one time i just liked it finally....picked up the split and Time Trials and have been a fan since....unfortunately i have heard some shitty things about their personalities but they have always been cool to be and i enjoy the tunes
