BOXCUTTER

'The Ill Testament'

Similar Bands:
Mushmouth, Fury Of Five, E-Town Concrete, Body Count

Review:
Boxcutter, the Kingz Of Thugz are back. I've been bugging Mahmood to get my hands on a copy of this for who knows how long. I love Pitbull Ways and Thug Rock so my anticipation was pretty high when I saw this in my pile of albums to review.

For those who don't know. Boxcutter is pretty much a super-group of hardcore OG's. Featuring Ismean (Fury Of V) and Mad Joe Black (OTW/WIC) on vocals and Richie Krutch and Chris Mushmouth on guitars giving their version of a straight from the streets hip-hop/hardcore mix. Bands like Body Count and E-Town Concrete come to mind for quick comparisons but Boxcutter has a style all their own. If you think Mushmouth with hip-hop beats you are on the right track.

Most of the record features the hip-hop/hardcore hybrid and this material is the heaviest stuff they've recorded to date. BFL Soldier, Ghetto Story Part II, Crown Of Righteousness are so good its hard for me to get passed the halfway point of the album because I'm always going back to listen to them again. Each of the more instrument focused songs are catchy yet keep their hard edge. It will be hard not to bob your head or put your foot through someone's torso once you pop this one. For songs like Kingz Of Thugz, Too Young To Die, and The Recipe that band opts to almost ditch the instruments completely and generate their focus on straight up hip-hop. Kingz is a call for battle against the "wangstas" of the world. Too Young is a ballad track about a fallen friend. The Recipe will have girls shaking their asses while their boyfriends are brawling.

Boxcutter is definitely a "love'em or hate'em" band and I'm a total sucker for this stuff. This album has gotten heavy play time since I've got my hands on it and I don't see that stopping for awhile. The best thing is two of my favorite older Boxcutter songs (Ghetto Story and Move'em Out) are featured as bonus tracks on the record. Hearing Ismean on the mic again brings me back to the Fury Of Five days and gets me pumped. I can't wait to see these guys live.

If you know and like old Boxcutter, prepare to be blown away. If you don't like them, well that's your loss. If you are into bands like E-Town Concrete and Body Count then you'll definitely be into this record.
