Review:
This band here has potential to get pretty big if they get marketed right. Zonaria sounds like a clone of Dimmu Borgir sprinkled with some Behemoth. Touring with either of those bands would likely garner them a pretty solid fan base.
The core of the band is melodic death metal but taking obvious influence from Dimmu Borgir there is quite a decent amount of the symphonic black metal that the Norwegian's are famous for. Zonaria even throws in clean vocals from time to time. Neither of those elements is done to the level of Dimmu Borgir however. The band strays away from the cloning of the "Dark Fortresses" from time to time and goes for a crunchier black/death metal that reminds me a lot of Behemoth. Those parts are only scattered throughout so don't get too comfortable with the idea.
This album is one of those cases where there isn't too much to talk about. There style is currently being done bigger and better by Dimmu Borgir. That isn't to say this is a bad album. It's solid straight through, has a great production value, and the band definitely can play the piss out of their instruments. I'm definitely interested in hearing some of the older material from the band but I have a feeling that it's always going to be a case of material that's been done before and better.
If you really like the melodic black/death metal that Dimmu Borgir is doing then you'll enjoy this record. Your mind won't be blown but you'll be able to appreciate it. I'm still curious to hear some of their older material, especially the first release which was just prior to them giving up the idea of being a power metal band. And even though Dimmu is the superior band, if Zonaria decides to stick to their idea they'll pick up a lot of fans of bands like Dimmu and Borknagar.
