Similar Bands: Death Before Dishonor, Punishment, Fury Of Five
Review:
I wasn't aware that Shattered Realm was writing or recording new material until I stumbled upon this split in my pile of reviews. I've heard countless rumors about lineup changes and future plans for albums but nothing was concrete until I saw this split with Toe Tag.
The first 3 songs are from Toe Tag who hail from Florida and are ex-members of Glasseater and Remembering Never. I never even heard of this band until I listened to this split. They play pretty straight forward hardcore that reminds me a lot of Death Before Dishonor with not as many breakdowns. I can tell I'd only like them in small doses because although I enjoyed their songs on this split, I didn't want to hear much more after that.
The last 3 tracks on this are from the mosh kings of New Jersey, Shattered Realm. This is honestly the best stuff they've recorded since Broken Ties, Spoken Lies. If the two new tracks on this split are any indication of what future material is going to sound like, consider me excited for the next full length. I enjoyed the last record but it lacked some of the metal influence that creeped out in the earlier works. If you listen closely to this you can hear that element sneaking back into the mix. Not too mention the songs are heavy as balls. The last track on the disc is a recording of the intro the band has been playing for almost as long as I can remember that goes right into a cover of Fury Of Five's Every Man For Himself. This cover shouldn't be a surprise if you've seen The Realm in the last few years live. The song is one of my favorite by Fury Of Five and I was pleased to hear Shattered Realm do the song justice. They even stay true to the original recording and sing the chorus off key. I love it.
For a split this is a pretty solid recording. The new Realm stuff is super heavy and for most it will serve as an introduction to Toe Tag who I'm sure will please a lot of listeners. Don't forget to break out the mosh shoes before popping this one in.
