Review:
Noise. Pop? Not really. People will always try to call something pop if it sounds catchy in the slightest way. I'm guilty of it. When you mix a lot of feedback with just general scratchy instrumentation, the product is usually just your run of the mill "noise." The thing about Demure - also witnessed on their 2009 release d1, which is playing in the background as I type this, took me a few listens to get into. I like that. Music should occasionaly frustrate and challenge me to keep up with it, instead of the other way around. In a way, it is as if Demure is challenging me to mature along with their music. Phil Price's grinding, ultra loud riffage and a terrific rhythm section anchor to an intense musical unit, but above all else it's John Buckell's powerful bellow - almost operatic in tone but retaining an everyman toughness - that sets this band apart. That said, the only downside is that the songs on the EP occasionally lag at times, especially the song "1 Vision", though the EP has a collective power that any alternative rock/grunge fan should be able to appreciate. The song "T" is eventful for its mournful lyrics and Chris Caller's mind blowing bass lines, while "She'll be just fine" immediately sets the blistering pace with big bruising riffs and Neil Rawles drum assault. To sum it all up, d1 is all about straightforward grungy music that presents a unique new voice in the alternative genre.
