Review:
I don't like grindcore. I keep telling myself this over and over again. It's noise. It's headache music. I don't like grindcore. Yet I find myself liking this. I keep listening to it. Maybe it's the sheer relentlessness of it that pulls me in, or perhaps it's that despite the chaos I can understand what's going on with the music and I find it jaw-droopingly good. Either way, for whatever reason, I'm forced to re-evaluate a genre of music I had all but written off.
The CD clocks in at about ten minutes long., maybe less, and all the songs are ridiculously short and fast save for the final track, (Tonight We Revolt) which is a slower groove song that is only a little bit longer than the others.. The drums are programmed, but they sound real enough. On first listen I didn't even realize that it was a machine. The guitars are fast and technical with blazing runs and fills, and just a hint of the riff in there somewhere. Each song has at least one good hook in it somewhere but it goes by so fast you're not even aware that you heard it. Vocals sound more tortured than angry, but there's raw passion in there nonetheless. You can't understand a word of them, but you can understand the power with which they come at you. I guess my only issue is that the bass is difficult to hear, caught in the howling guitar frequencies and lost among the maelstrom of blast beats, but that's hardly uncommon in most styles of metal.
It's hard to pick a standout track because they're all so short. Burn Without Reading (Trust Me) shows some superlative musicality for all it's speed, so I would vote that one as my favorite, but overall, I'd have to just say the whole thing is good because of how it attacks your ears and leaves them bleeding for more. While I probably won't rush out and start getting into grind bands, Napier is one such project I can appreciate.
Josh Mahesh is the key creative component to this band. Anything that kid gets involved with ususally turns out pretty decent. His Throat Plunger project is pretty comical but if you listen to it closely you'll catch some awesome guitar work throughout. Sure this DeVito's baby but its hard to steal the show from Josh if he's involved.
