Arafel - Selective Amnesia

Well this record was a complete waste of my time. Arafel (not the black metal band) delivers us a 7 song turd called Selective Amnesia. They should have called it Stolen Ideas.

Arafel is the term used in Dune to describe the destruction of mankind. Using a Dune phrase was already done by Shai Hulud and a decent black metal band from Israel already uses the name.

Strike Two comes in the music. This band must only listen to Darkest Hour and Black Dahlia Murder but unfortunately can't keep pace with those said bands. This watered down version of a watered down version of melodic metal in vain of At The Gates has been beaten to death. Arafel offers no new ingredients to make their music either interesting or stand out. Oh and of course there are a good number of piss-poor breakdowns strategically placed throughout the record.

The 3rd Strike comes from the vocalist, whom I assume is also responsible for the terrible lyrics. To start, singer Nathan Sizemore, can't do anything right. His screams lack power and come off half-assed. Every sentence he starts to scream it trails off into a whine by the last few syllables. He makes horrific attempts throughout the record to try death growls and they fade just as quickly as his normal scream. It truly is pathetic. As a singer you should know what you are capable of doing and not doing. Trying to do things with your voice that you know isn't a good idea, is just that, not a good idea. I wonder why the band didn't tell him that his vocal range isn't as good as he thinks it is. Lastly where he lacks in sound he doesn't make up for it with a message. All the lyrics are lame tries at being witty that come off slightly lower in creativity than the lyrics of the first Coal Chamber record. "You can't teach a bad dog, good tricks". Seriously?

There is definitely a reason I've never heard of this band. I can't see where anyone would like them. Everything that they do has been done and is still being done better by a ton of other bands. This band is so bad that I can't find a single other review for this record and the only information I can get on them is from their myspace, which is also limited in content. I don't recommend this for anyone. I don't even think I can use this disc as a coaster for my drinks. It will ruin the flavor of my tasty beverage.

And yes that is a picture of a dung beetle and dried piece of crap. I thought it fit better than the actual artwork.

for starters, i'm glad you referenced "coal chamber" in this review, as it gives the reader a clear perspective of your taste in music. personally, i would liken nate's lyrics to that of KoRn, or possibly Limp Bizkit, but only because i hate him and wish his band the worst. conjuring up some relatively obscure long lost rap-rock band (which is absolutely ludicrous; Dez Fafara is a much better lyricist than Nate Sizemore) simply sharpens the dart. clearly you have studied the worst of the worst, and this e.p. must represent some part of that. cheap pot, a sprite can, and your favorite burned c.d., featuring evanescence and story of the year. this is what i think of when i read this review.

as a close and personal friend to the singer, i can only say one thing: you give him too much credit. he rips off every singer he's ever heard, from morrissey to danzig and back again. but if you are going to shit on him, please do it with intelligent, insightful commentary. this review is lazy, poorly written and you clearly did not bother to research the band, or their influences. i expect more from such a prestigious (named) website.

How is one to do research on a band you can hardly find anything about?

You're absolutely right. This review is lazy but the same could be said for your good friends band. It's lazy to rip off every cliché style out there in the hopes of getting popular rather than writing something original. And like i said, everything they ripoff they do it poorly. Lets see BDM cloned At The Gates and for awhile sounded pretty ok doing it, Aborted stole from Carcass and Goremageddon gives alot of Carcass' work a run for its money. It's quite possible to steal from other bands and sound good doing it. Your "friends" band seemed to research what was popular and possibly get them laid and as fast as they could cranked out one of the most boring records i've ever heard.

Look at that finely rolled ball of dung.

I don't think that Beetle ripped of Danzig though.
