As I was reading Project 86's press release for its new album "Wait for the Siren" it said: "P86 decided to go an entirely new route with this new release". I figured cool because their old stuff was horrible. At about the same time the CD is beginning to play and it starts off with some Irish influenced guitar work and it has me thinking, wow they really did change it up, but that did not last long as the first track "Fall Goliath Fall" Sounds like a weird mix of Marlyn Manson and any typical metalcore band you can think of. Look at some of the people who make guest appearances on the CD for a better idea: Rocky Gray (Evanescence), Brian “Head” Welch (Korn, Love and Death).
I don't know what they were talking about when they said that this is an entirely new route for them, because from what I can tell this sounds exactly like everything else I have ever heard from them. The only thing I kind of find different on this new release is that they went with a more radio friendly approach, but it's still the same old shit.
The band lists their influences as: Deftones, Sepultura, Sick of it all, Snapcase, The Clash and Fugazi. You might hear a little Deftones on here (especially in the guitar work) but that is about it. I cannot hear anything that remotely sounds like any of the above bands in this watered down cookie cutter turd of an album. You would think that a band that likes great bands like Fugazi and Sick of it All would play better music, but that is not the case.
This is metalcore/ nu metal/ radio rock at its crappiest. In my opinion when metalcore is done right you get "Opposite of December" by Poison the Well. When done wrong you get Project 86's new album "Wait for the Siren". The gang is all here screamed chorus, gang vocals, breakdowns, sung verses, talked verses it's like a who's who of cliche metalcore mixed with radio friendly rock. I do not think it will be long before they are headlining one of the many crap metal fest that are all the rage now.
If you already like this band, then this is right in your wheelhouse. If you don't like this band I applaud you for your taste in music, but I also suggest you avoid this at all costs. If you do want to check out this band live they are playing Sept 15 - Shippensburg, PA - Shippensburg Community Fair (that's right community fair) for all of you in the great Keystone state.
