Vimana, where have I heard that name? Oh yeah, Ancient Aliens! Surprised it took this long for someone to take that name. Onto the music, where have I heard this before? Oh yeah, they used to be Collapse and released this demo under that name in 2010. I suppose the name change happened due to their being a hundred bands named Collapse. Now the EP is just called that.
Despite this not being new music, I am very glad it gained a proper release and will hopefully also gain the band notoriety. Vimana is a Colorado death/grind outfit that most notably features former Cephalic Carnage guitarist Zac Joe on guitar. It also features the drummer of Vale of Pnath (who are awesome and need more attention as well).
Needless to say, Zac Joe was what caught my attention when I first heard of the band. When I found out he had left Cephalic Carnage I was way bummed as he was a founding member and songwriter. Judging by their latest outings, they're certainly missing him. Does he keep his flair for awesomely quirky grinding death metal in his new outing? The answer is without a doubt yes.
The first track admittedly had me a little worried as it's the most straight forward of the four. Come track two however, those worries quickly subsided. Opening with a crazy sweeping pattern into a Human Remainsesque riff I was completely hooked. This is what I've come to love of his writing style. If you loved his work on Lucid Interval and earlier you will love this. Now, it's not to say he's stuck in that style and I'm judging this on his past works. The band seem to be a riff factory.
These 4 tracks come in at a little under 18 minutes. The two longest songs are the strongest. Even though they're long, they never get boring. Vimana mixes up the tech death/grind masterfully and weave an awesome heavy web. It is a very strong debut and I certainly hope it's a sign of better things to come as 4 tracks simply is not enough.
