South Carolina's Apart is a contemporary screamo/hardcore band that I played a show with in a basement in Philly late last year. The band's intense stage presence captivated me enough to get me away from my post set residency at my merch table, a great compliment coming from myself. I was pleased to hear that Mayfly Records would be releasing their new LP, Gray Light.
The 22 minutes presented are a solid representation of modern emotional hardcore. The production yields similarities to that of Touche Amore's debut LP, "....to the beat of a dead horse". Not to say that Apart is duplicating a sucessfull formula, they do things in their own way and do it well. From the opening moments of "Carolina Gold" to closer "Dead Air", the band showcases blasts of anger with jagged, yet clean guitars and distorted bass. Emotionally charged moments of reverb soaked chaos, reminiscent of Pianos Become The Teeth, keep things interesting. Again, not a direct comparison but more of a subtle "for fans of" description to give you the idea of the brand of hardcore these guys play. Overall, a solid debut offering from Apart that is sure to elevate them to the next level in this game we call hardcore.
