Most would agree that Punk Rock is the least complicated genre in all of music. It can be played by people who don't even know how to play it. Still it isn't an easy accomplishment to write a classic punk record. On Pride & Tradition, Harrington Saints try to put eleven songs together that achieve just that.
***SPOILER ALERT***
They don't.
However, they don't completely bomb either. Most of it is pretty good actually. This is straight forward street punk/rock and Oi!. The problem is that it's almost too straight forward. It is exactly what you'd expect from a band fitting their description. Songs about working, the system, unions, thieves, cheats, this, that, and whatever. The tempo is quick and the choruses are memorable, but all sound too alike. The guitars are the highlight with their Cock Sparrer-ish leads and driving rhythm, but it's not enough to differentiate each track. The vocals initially bothered me as I thought they sounded almost distant. With more listens I've grown to like them, but they do grow a little tired by the end of the record.
Most songs hang around the two minute mark, but even though this is a 25 minute record, it is over before you know it. Unfortunately, that is because the songs are way too seamless and you transition from one track to the next without much variation.
I know there isn't supposed to be anything flashy going on here, I understand punk rock. This record just gives me the feeling that these songs are much better on their own than all bunched together on an album. Harrington Saints are clearly capable of writing quality songs, but they need to mix something up a little because this record gets boring quick.
