Woah, I shouldn’t have slept on this record for so long. I’ve had White Faces self-titled record sitting on the back-burner since the beginning of this year, and having just given it a couple of plays through, I can, without reservation, say it is one of the most rocking things I’ve ever heard. I’ve been having a good luck streak with checking out new music lately, and White Faces certainly doesn’t end that streak.
White Faces is a pop-rock band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but it sounds like their coming straight out of the L.A mold. Overdriven guitars rocking minimalist three chord ditties with shreddy solos, reverbed vocals and harmonies from the trio, and some surf-punk vibes a la Harlem are just some of the things you can expect from White Faces first effort.
If I HAD to come up with a complaint about this record, it would have to be that the drumming can be a little quiet in the mix from time to time, but that is a very minor grumble in what is otherwise a perfect summertime record. The sense of apathy on this record really strikes a chord with me as a third-try college sophomore, such as the lethargic in sound and lyrics, Lazy Man: “I’ve just been counting time. Ain’t got no job, and that’s just fine. I’ve been a lazy boy doing all the things that I enjoy.” The similarly fantastic and perfect song to put on your indie-rock crush’s mixtape, Happy highlights what you can do with a simple verse-chorus-verse structure, and similarly simple lyrics, “I like the way you smile when you’re happy for a while.”
I’m not going to draw any fancy conclusions because this isn’t a fancy record. What it is is fun as fuck, shreddy, dirty rock and roll that will appeal to you as a fan of pretty much subgenre of rock whether it be punk, indie, or even hardcore. Check it out!
