There seems to be a bit of a surge right now for bands playing a mixture of very melodic punk rock and Americana. Initially I wasn't into this kind of shit at all. I picked up The Gaslight Anthems' 59 Sound on a suggestion and it took me a long time to appreciate it. Since then it has become one of my preferred genres. I am always looking for additions to the small list of bands I listen to from this style so I'm glad The Downtown Struts fell into my lap.
Like their peers, their influences are worn on their sleeves. Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Clash and Social Distortion are all clearly heard. The general feel of the record is upbeat at a mid-tempo pace right from the start of the opener "Prologue." Immediately the vocals remind me of Chris Fogal of The Gamits and Chris Cresswell from The Flatliners. That isn't where the similarities end though, all the instruments have a vary familiar sound. While that keeps the record pretty predictable, it also assures quality record based on my affinity for their cohorts.
My only complaint is how dangerously close they come to sounding like a straight up pop punk band at moments. They never cross the line into that horrid territory, but the walk right up to it. It isn't often, but their softer moments get a little too feathery for me.
If you are a fan of the aforementioned bands than I imagine you will enjoy this record. Don't expect it to push the more established acts out of your record player for an extended period of time though. While this is a good record, it's hard to find a real hit and almost becomes a little too comfortable. If you are looking for another record to through in your rotation this is it, but they are going to need another album or two to really shine.
