I first heard Ruckus on their three way split with World Of Pain and Xibalba. I liked it, but wasn't particularly blown away. After many delays due to record labels and band members other projects Of Malice And Man finally has surfaced via Harvcore Records.
Ruckus play hard and heavy on this record. Ten songs of unrelenting hardcore with plenty of modern feel. Given the bands other projects such as Twitching Tongues and Alpha & Omega, you can hear a lot of the same going on throughout Of Malice and Man. Most obvious is the thudding and distinct back-up vocals and the thundering rhythm section. But where Twitching Tongues takes the road less traveled, Ruckus goes barreling down the main road forcing other bands to pull to the shoulder. Sure, it is pretty typical hardcore and it gets predictable. But like I've said countless times before in other reviews for hardcore records, it doesn't need to be new, it just needs to be good.
Musically, Ruckus hits all the right notes as far as the inclusion of solos, southern rock feeling riffs, mosh parts and fast parts. The song structures are what really help Of Malice And Man feel like a new record. I don't necessarily expect everyone who hears this to be blown away, but I think this will catch on with a good amount of them.
Personally, I'd like to catch these guys because I feel like they may pull it off even better live. Why? I don't fucking know, I just do. Hopefully I'll get the chance to be proven right sometime soon.
