If you're already familiar with this band, you know exactly what they sound like. If you're familiar with their influences, they will be a trip down memory lane for you, back to the days of backpacks at hardcore shows, unapologetically ridiculous chain wallets and center parted haircuts.
You know how there used to be those bands who had loose hardcore affiliations and always found their way onto shows despite being weird and melodic and lacking dumb chugga chugga breakdowns? Or how about when your favorite hardcore band forsook almost everything that was hardcore and started putting out hardcore influenced grunge rock with melody and talked about their....ugh...."feelings"? If you're over 27, you KNOW exactly what I'm talking about, don't even try to lie.
To get to the meat of this article, California's Twitching Tongues is all of this, and most surprisingly of all, does not disappoint in any way. All of these songs are tremendous and unabashed 90's alterna-metal worship, straight down to the heavy Only Living Witness influence and the insider nods to songs like Type O Negative's "Xero Tolerance" in "Astigmatism". It's important noting that at no point do I suspect Twitching Tongues to believe they are pulling a fast one on dumb hardcore kids riding the recent 90's resurgence. This is the music they grew up with and are paying a completely shameless tribute to, and doing it very well in the process.
Bottom line, I fucking love this band. This band is everything I listened to when I was 13 practically giftwrapped and delivered straight to my door. When I first spun this record, memories of 8th and 9th grade came flooding back, and at no point did I not have a smile on my face for every single note played. Well done boys. Now where's my ball chain necklace and ironic bowling shirt with the leopard print collar?
