Looking up info about Redeemer on the Net, it seems there are a lot of people excited about this band. I'd suggest that if you enjoy bands like Defeater or Modern Life is War, you may like these guys. In that case, don't let my review deter you from getting a copy of their "First Degree" EP (or listening to it online; it's available as a free download at lambgoat.com).
I love concept albums, and reading about this one got me interested. The five tracks tell one continuous story that isn't pretentious or at all difficult to understand. Basically, a lonely, depressed man has a bit too much to drink, crashes into a family, kills them, and drives on. That occurs on track 1, "The Sorrow and Regret." The lone survivor of said family appears on track 2, "Whiskey and Smoke," and plots his revenge on the drunk driver.
All of the songs, with the exception of the first half of "Fury and Chains" are set at about the same tempo. The vocals, while spouting some pretty good lines, are done in more or less the same manner throughout the record, with little variation.
Some of the riffs, I can't help thinking, would be better at a faster tempo. I understand the album is meant to be gloomy, to set a dark mood, but it gets monotonous after a couple songs.
I like concept albums, and the way "First Degree" executes their concept. And the lyrics here are very well-written, but the music is somewhat bland, aside from a few moments here and there.
But, as I said, there are a lot of people who are into this kind of slow, vaguely melodic, gut-wrenching stuff. Maybe it's just not for me.
Redeemer are from Phoenix, AZ. Their Facebook page describes them as a "Christian hardcore" band, though there's nothing explicitly Christian in the lyrics.
