Pick Your Side popped up last year with their debut EP Survival Prayer or A389 Records. They made a little noise and quickly got back into the studio. This time they bring us an LP in the form of Let me Show You Hoe Democracy Works.
First, I have to say this record looks great, the cover art by Ed Repka is fucking awesome. I've probably spent an hour of my life looking at this cover. That is a pretty fucking long time to look at a record. Anwyay, Jeff Beckman is back with sixteen songs of absolutely furious hardcore. Anyone familiar with his work in Haymaker knows what to expect vocally. It is an odd sound for a vocalist, but gives his voice a fuck ton of character. Musically, this thrashes almost non-stop from beginning to end. Back again is a bit of the lo-fi sound from their EP, but nothing too drastic. There seems to be a little more metal happening on a few tracks and maybe even some subtle melodic shit. Nothing takes away from the absolute pissed off feeling on each song. The target of each song regularly sticks to political and social issues, but if the cover art didn't cover that than you are a fucking idiot.
I liked the Survival Prayer EP, but I didn't have all that high expectations for this album. I am not exactly sure why, and now I feel like an idiot because this thing fucking rules. Even when it starts to get a little tired in the middle, "Ham Sandwich/Doomsday Demise" switches things up perfectly to revive my interest.
I don't know if these guys are still predominately a studio band, but if that is the case, hopefully they can keep up this pace and continue to release quality like this. Pick Your Side might end up on some end of the year lists with this one.
