This is seemingly flying under the radar (or maybe just mine). I'm not sure why I haven't heard of them when you consider the label they're on. More so, it's confusing when you listen to how good they really are. I always love being surprised by bands I know nothing about.
Hailing from St. Louis, the band takes their name from an early Black Flag compilation album. They label their sound as "blackened hardcore." That "genre" is perfectly fitting as at times parts remind of I guess what is called post rock influenced black metal bands. This band is just pure evil and apocalyptic sounding. From the opening sounds they paint bleak and dark soundscapes.
Through slow dirges and quick chaotic bashings, the nine tracks on Cycles of Light pummel the listener and leave them feeling hopeless. It's odd that those emotions are considered a good thing to this listener, but any time a band can pull that off it has to be admired. This album is more than a solid debut. It does have some moments that drag slightly, but they're most certainly few and far between. Seriously, give this band a chance if you like dark and evil sounding hardcore. I'm still confused why more people aren't talking about them.
