When I found out that Lars Frederiksen had a new side project, I was beyond stoked. Rancid will always be one of my go to bands when I'm looking for something to listen to, and one of my favorite vinyls to listen to is the self-titled Lars Frederiksen & the Bastards. I couldn't wait to get my hands on the first EP by The Old Firm Casuals, and when I did I wasn't disappointed.
Featuring Lars Frederiksen on guitars/vocals, Casey Watson (from Look Back & Laugh/Never Healed) on bass/vocals, and Paul Rivas (from Never Healed) on drums/vocals, The Old Firm Casuals are a 3 piece of straight up street punk. From the second "Old Firm (D.M.S.)" kicks in, you can hear their influences. The production quality of the entire EP is gritty, giving an almost gruff and distorted sound to all 4 tracks that give them a shit ton of character. "Apocalypse Coming" is by far my favorite of the 4. The riffs are bouncy and the lyrics are catchy. The sound of the 80's Oi! bands that The Old Firm Casuals list as influences can be heard throughout the record, mixed with the unmistakeable style of Lars Frederiksen.
This EP is the bands first release, but there were 4 other releases by the band last year (2 splits and 2 more EPs). They all be checked out, and there is no better place to start than with this one.

Been listening to this EP nonstop since last summer, lone wolf is def my fav song. Havent had a chance to get the split they did with the insane dogs yet but the army of one EP, the lions share EP and the split they did with last resort are all fucking excellent. People hate on lars but i love everything he puts out.

All of the things they released are awesome. And I feel the same way. I can't name one record that he's been associated with that hasn't been great (other than let the dominoes fall, but Rancid gets a pass and is allowed to have one crappy album)

I like this as well as most things that lars has done but I still kind of want to make one of those Wonka memes that says "you're an Old Firm Casual? you must have beat up at least 500 Scottish hooligans in your day"

i like how your review mentions the gritty production. Lars is the biggest producer in the game yet opted to take this project into the garage and record it old school instead of some million dollar studio. I think its perfect for that throwback street punk/oi sound.
