Static Radio NJ is a punk band hailing from New Brunswick, NJ. With nearly a 3 year gap between albums, "We Are All Beasts" brings a refreshing change in Static Radio's sound. While earlier material yielded a heavy influence from Kid Dynamite and Lifetime, they've redirected to a more melodic approach. I came across Static Radio after seeing them multiple times around 5 years ago, the highlight being a "New Brunswick Takeover" in Boston with The Ergs, Lifetime, and The Bouncing Souls.
Frontman Mike Santostefano's delivery is rough around the edges, yet melodic. My only gripe is many melodies/harmonies are repeated throughout the album and are somewhat predictable. Don't let that throw you off though, as "We Are All Beasts" is a fairly consistent punk album from front to back. Banger "I Might Kill" is a solid introductory track to new listeners, showcasing some melody but with that aforementioned rough edge.
Arguably the album's defining moment, "Incestuous Friends" unleashes a doom inspired jamfest to close out the record. I can only hope that future material continues in this direction, further distancing Static Radio from the awful pop punk plague in the Garden State.
