The Damned Things - High Crimes

Anthrax, Fall Out Boy, Every Time I Die and Alkaline Trio don’t have a whole lot in common on the surface, but when you break down the line-up of the “supergroup” The Damned Things, that is exactly what you’ll find.

Unfortunately, supergroup has become a bit of a dirty word in music as we’ve been treated to more Chickenfoot’s than Cream’s. In this case, The Damned Things are more like Cream, or to put it bluntly, they don’t suck. It’s quite the opposite actually, High Crimes not only meets the vaunted expectations of a supergroup, but exceeds them!

Their sound makes sense if you don’t over complicate it. There’s the head bobbing rhythms and riffs from Anthrax, the grit and swagger of Every Time I Die, the melody and pop sensibilities of Fall Out Boy, and that intangible thing that makes Alkaline Trio so likable. Imagine if Thin Lizzy released a debut album in the grunge era of the 90’s. That’s what I hear when I listened to The Damned Things.

High Crimes sounds confident in several different ways. From the Nirvana-esque opener “Cells,” to the lurching and bluesy “Storm Charmer”, the band sounds entirely comfortable. And that’s the way it should be! These are established world class musicians in The Damned Things and they deliver as such. Yet it’s still shocking just how great High Crimes is!

You could point to eight out of these ten tracks and tell me they are singles and I would believe you. I’m personally far too out of touch with what is considered a modern rock hit, but The Damned Things seem to deliver just that, track after track. It’s impressive to say the least. My mind tells me I hear the aforementioned Thin Lizzy and Nirvana, as well as some Stone Temple Pilots and the meandering chaos of At The Drive-in, but ultimately The Damned Things are their own damn thing.
