The Beautiful Ones - Birth Of Desire

The Beautiful Ones from Arizona have taken a different approach to hardcore. Given their name and album artwork for Birth Of Desire they appear to be headed in a softer direction. When the music hits it is evident that they are not as gentle as their aesthetic.

The Beautiful Ones cite the currently popular influences of Life Of Agony and Biohazard. Being big fans of both, I don't hear much if any at all of either of those bands in their sound. What I do hear is pretty typical modern hardcore. Sure they try to switch it up here and there with Twitching Tongue like singing parts, but it comes off half ass and unconvincing.

This isn't entirely bad at all, but after reading the bands press release I had higher expectations. This just isn't anything fresh at all. The inclusion of guest vocals from Luis Hernandez of Alpha & Omega help and the last half of the the closing track "Cut Me Out" leave hope though.

Birth Of Desire gets by, but on a barely passable grade. Too much mediocrity and not fully embracing the unfamiliar crowd they tentatively tread. I'm not ready to write the band off, but if they don't make any changes on their next release I can't imagine them gaining much ground.
