"Heiress is comprised of former members of Botch, Himsa, Undertow, Jough Dawn Baker, Harbinger, and Pistols At Dusk. A well worn five piece hailing from the Pacific Northwest, they play a brand of dissonant post metal infused with a cold, hardcore heart."
Heiress is a band that I know many aren't familiar with. Growing up, I was really into Himsa and frontman John Pettibone's dominant bark. I was fairly bummed when the Seattle based metal band decided to hang it up, but am pleasantly satisfied with what Pettibone's post-Himsa outfit has done thus far. I first heard Heiress on their split with Narrows, and really dug the gloomy metal with a hardcore feel to their songs. On this EP, "Naysayer" is a preview to the band's upcoming debut LP "Early Frost"
Things get started with the self titled track, with pummeling, fast paced drums and distorted guitars. Pettibone's voice comes in around the 30 second mark and doesn't let up for the remainder of the track. There's something for everyone here, some two step riffs for the hardcore kids, dissonance for the metal kids, and powerful vocals and lyricism for those looking to pile on and scream. The fact that Heiress is such a departure from the sound of Himsa is quite refreshing, rather then a frontman leaving his band to start another that essentially sounds the same (The Chariot).
Accompanying the album track is b-side "Just Throats", which is definitely a more progressive, experimental side to the band. Guitars are soaked in delay, and drums are slower paced. The aforementioned post metal influence is more fitting for this track. Overall, the 6 minutes of material leaves me anticipating the LP to be released this winter. A point made in many of my reviews is my disdain for repetition in hardcore, and I have high hopes that Heiress can keep my short attention span in check.
