Crazy and The Brains are self-proclaimed anti-folk, popsters. Chris Urban (Crazy) and Jeff Rubin (The Brains) formed the band in a garage with a xylophone and an acoustic guitar. When previously asked how they came to be, they responded, "Our former band mate quit, took all the equipment and instruments with him and bought a new Infinity. We tried to keep on going with what we could borrow but everyone was way too drunk and sloppy. After some more months spent being drunk and retarded, we decided to start a new band with what we had, which was a guitar and my xylophone I took from High School." Sounds punk rock enough, but for an "anti-folk" band, there sure is a lot of folk sound on this album. Therefore, laden with sarcasm, Crazy And The Brains brings us Don't Need No Snacks.
This is a simple, happy-go-lucky album that is just fun. It doesn't seem like they are looking to prove themselves to anyone, the boys just want to do what they enjoy. It is interesting that they chose "Snacks" to name their album after. This song has the lyrical stylings of the late 90s surf pop group LFO (Lyte Funky Ones, anyone?). For example, one verse goes like this "And you're throwing those orders hard on me like I look like I'm from Burger King. But I don't want no problems, I don't want nothing, and I don't want a bite of your Egg McMuffin. Cause we're just now getting it started, so this all might sound retarded. And if it does, well it's okay, because it's way more fun this way." Well...they were certainly right about how it sounds. However, they quickly redeem themselves with the next track "Biggest In The World". Upbeat and in tune with the old punk we all used to love. The album is filled with pop culture references. One song is even named "Lindsay Lohan" and although I seriously question the judgment of anyone who would even joke about wanting to be her man, the song isn't half bad. "Outer Space" attempts to rhyme 'story' with 'chicken cacciatore'...and that's pretty much it so I don't have much to add. They end nicely with "Saturday Night Live", another song that makes me think they actually do take this a little seriously.
I don't really know what to say about Crazy And The Brains. Don't Need No Snacks pulls part of me in with its old school styling, offering a sound that is all but dead in this industry. That being said, I'm really having a hard time figuring out if this is just a joke or not. I would imagine a lot of labels not taking them seriously. If they want to take this somewhere, they need to reexamine their lyrics a little bit.
