Most bands will tell you that a demo is a very important tool. It can make or break them. They're the first impression on people and if they don't hit the listener the right way it's not easy to win them over later. Pennsylvania's Cold Soul is toeing that dangerous line on their demo.
They play a brand of heavy hardcore and a style that has been gaining more popularity again, something I welcome with open arms. With this genre it's not easy to create something that hasn't been done before. What I always look for in bands like this is well written songs and lots of pissed off energy. Again, they're toeing the line on these 3 tracks.
The recording is lacking a good bit and it's mainly the guitars. They're not hitting nearly heavy enough. It's obvious this is demo quality and it's unfortunate as a better recording would give the band a better energy and something that sticks with the listener more.
The tracks have everything to get the crowd moving. From the usual intro to midpaced mosh/2 steps parts. Am I loving it? Not at all, but I'm certainly hating it either. With more growth and a better recording the band could release something quite mean. Right now this is a demo that while not bad is not separating them from other bands doing a similar style. Give it a listen as they've put it up on their Stereokiller page (linked on the side).
