I don't see the big deal -- it's made to put on burgers and shitty sandwiches and is, without a doubt, the only cheese you can use for a grilled cheese and NOT be an asshole. It's not for eating with wine and appreciating with your fake-ass refined palate. Think of it in reverse, would you waste an awesome greyure on a fucking grilled cheese sandwich? Doubtful.
I constantly see people bitching about American cheese on the internet and I don't get it at all. It's good for certain things, and necessary for a few things, but it definitely isn't something worth getting pissed off about.
I love gruyere and thin apple or pear slices on rye bread (grilled)
Call me pretentious. Do it, faggot.

Vegan cheese is fucking horrible
If you're going to go full on vegan why do you need cheese/meatlike products.
A) As a transitional vehicle for people whose mentality is still entwined in the concept of eating quick burgers/sandwiches/etc. If you go full on vegan you're probably giving up a lot of things you love. Old habits die hard, and it's easier to make vegan mac and cheese and feel okay about it than break veg and feel bad.
B) Friends are grilling. Bring some veggie burgers. Much easier and less embarrassing than bringing some dumb salad or something.
C) Sometimes it's easier to just throw a veggie burger in the microwave than to whip up some elaborate vegetable meal. Even vegans don't always have time to whip up crazy shit, just like you don't.
Also, not all vegan cheese is bad, and some brands are actually pretty fucking good.
