I understand that simply slapping wood together would be the understatement of the century with a closed back cab. However, that's why I said purchase an empty cab or one that is cheap and replace the speakers with the same speakers the high end cabs use. It's a much more cost effective way to get the same(or nearly the same) sound. A prime example would be Krank cabs. They are $1000. Either cabinet(the regular or Dime model) uses Eminence speakers that are at most $100 a piece. So you are paying $600 for lumber, wires, a jack plate, and grill. Doesn't make sense to me.

That's like suggesting the car you drive is only worth a couple hundred bucks in materials.
R&D is a long process of trial and error in order to find the "right" formula for the sound you want. You are paying for the name, advertising, R&D, production, distribution, etc.

so you're trying to tell me that there's no difference between Eminence speakers and Celestions?
boy you need to get your ears checked

perfect example... this isn't meant to knock anything or anyone involved but here it is.my cabinets are 1967 sunn 412srs, loaded with 7 of the 8 original 40 watt metal coned tranducer speakers, one was dead when i got it and i replaced it with a 50 watt Eminence Cannibus Rex speaker fresh out of the box. the other two cabinets we were using were two of the lower end marshall cabinets with silverbacked 25watt celestions. the sound that comes out of those Sunn towers compared to that Marshall blows it all away. it did it with my mesa, the peavey that was hooked up to it and my Model T as well. there's no way to talk a good cabinet out of it's worth.

I didn't say that at all. Of course there is a big difference. The Krank cabinets I was using as an example use Emminence speakers(Texas Heat or something like that in the Dime cab and the Vintage 12 in the other). I'm not completely sure of the exact name for both at the moment and I don't feel like looking. As far as the other posts go ... I know R&D is a big deal and different wood has different sound characters. It's extremely easy to find out exactly what type of wood they use and how the cabinets are put together. I'm not spending tons of money on a cab when I can easily build it(or buy a lesser brand of good quality) for next to nothing when compared to the cost of having that name brand slapped on it. If you use the same materials, measurements, and speakers there should be no reason it would sound any different.
