I pretty much just fell into the HR field after not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. I have a BS in Elementary Education and didn't want to pursue it. I started as an HR assistant and within a year I was promoted to HR Representative.. so I really lucked out. I work for Sears Holdings in a tire distribution center, we have about 60 associates. I'm responsible for payroll, hiring, orientations, FMLA.. all that jazz, and I also handle invoices. I really lucked out with all of it and fell into it before the economy hit rock bottom. Temp services would be an alright way to start, and get some experience. Be careful with them though, cuz some are awful. I would recommend Tempstar, Advance, or Randstad if possible. Try looking for HR jobs on Craigslist.. I see those pretty often. If you have any more question let me know!
