I want to like the sentiment, but I have a problem with the concept of 'hating the sin, not the sinner / loving the sinner, hating the sin,' which is directly related to the sign.

To name a few plausible examples (because people say things like this all the time):

"I hate your disgusting, sinful lifestyle, but you are (something cool) before God and therefore I love you."

For lifestyle read being gay, having sex before marriage, or any number of things any particular person or denomination detests. The people to whom those lines are directed don't need that kind of "love" or "acceptance."
