The FBI has arrested a group of anarchists who allegedly plotted to use high-powered explosives to blow up a bridge near Cleveland, Ohio, and enlist homeless people to attack financial institutions in downtown Cleveland.

Douglas Wright, 26, Brandon Baxter, 20, and Anthony Hayne, 35, all self-described anarchists, have been charged with conspiracy and attempted use of explosive materials to damage physical property affecting interstate commerce. Two other men Conner Stevens, 20 and Joshua Stafford, 23 were also arrested and may face similar charges.

According to the criminal complaint, last October the men began discussing plans to knock bank signs off of buildings in Cleveland. The men allegedly discussed the idea of using smoke grenades on the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Cleveland to create a diversion while they carried out their plan to topple the bank signs.

Wright, the alleged ringleader, had also discussed trying to recruit homeless people from shelters to carry out his plans to attack symbols of corporate and financial institutions.

The men were identified after a paid FBI informant alerted the FBI to their alleged plans to target the Brecksville-Northfield High Level Bridge on Route 82, which spans the Cuyahoga River south of Cleveland.

According to the complaint, the FBI informant recorded numerous conversations with Wright in which he discussed the need to obtain explosive devices or make them using the book "The Anarchist Cookbook."

Brandon Baxter allegedly told the informant that destroying a bridge would cause great financial harm.

"Taking out a Bridge in the business district would cost the … corporate big wigs a lot of money," Baxter allegedly said.

Wright and Baxter also discussed trying to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland.

The FBI said they used the informant to facilitate the men getting C4 explosives that they would use to target the bridge. According to the criminal complaint Stevens and Stafford were recruited towards the end of their planning to help them execute the attack. The men were arrested as they allegedly arranged to pick up the explosives.

"The complaint in this case alleges that the defendants took specific and defined actions to further a terrorist plot," said U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach. "The defendants stand charged based not upon any words or beliefs they might espouse, but based upon their own plans and actions."

FBI: Hey bros, we should get some C4 and blow up a bridge, I totally got a hookup.
Wright: Well, we were gonna knock over some signs but this sounds legit.
FBI: Alright cool, I'll call you when they come in.

What a waste of potential. If only they were reading Proudhon or Kropotkin instead of the anarchist cookbook.

just by the looks of them, it's a leap that they read a whole lot of books that don't have color illustrations and speech bubbles.

doing hard time will not be easy for dudes that look like this either. maybe they'll be able to brush up on the classics of anarchist literature when they're in the infirmary getting their assholes sewn back together.

It is a stretch, but even doing something like food not bombs would have been more helpful than some half ass plan to blow up a random bridge. Even knocking over the bank signs would have been better and that's pretty pointless as well.

or even just actually knocking over a bank; they'll be in prison just as long.

but i can never get behind pointless destruction, no matter what the stated motives are. these ringos blowing up a bridge and the taliban blowing up statues of buddha just seem a bit too similar. the "big wigs" they talk about aren't the only ones that use that bridge; so do regular people, so do ambulances, fire trucks, and everyone else. maybe they could read a little marx as well, because there's also just the fact that the world has finite resources and unnecessarily destroying anything that is composed of said resources should be repulsive unless the thing itself is destructive. repurpose things, recycle things, don't burn them down. it costs too much in blood and treasure to build them in the first place.

At one point, the group considered what might happen if they were arrested. “Baxter thought that they will all go to Guantanamo Bay if they get caught,” the affidavit says. “To prevent capture, he suggested getting tacks that they could throw out of the back of the car if they get in a chase.”

So... they are planning to knock over signs and use smoke grenades on the bridge as cover.... then the FBI pays someone and suddenly they are looking to blow up a bridge.. and conveniently know someone who can get them the C4 to do it.. the paid informant.

Dwarn is being a nutjoby dick to all us poor benighted pleebs as usual, but he did spot it.. as did many others before he decided to enlighten us all to something we would obviously have missed because we are all too mind controlled to agree with him completely on everything.

What I was pointing out is that the FBI didn't just randomly discover some group of unruly "anarchists" and then bait them, but rather, the entire scenario was a set-up from start to finish, for a specific purpose: to make headlines, to scare people, to make themselves look like heroes to all the gullible sheep out there, and most importantly, to provide "justification" for all the spying they're doing and how they are enlisting people to spy on each other. click here for link That is the FBI's standard M.O.

well sure, but that's not just the f.b.i., that's all law enforcement; entrapment is their bread and butter, that's a given. making quotas, making headlines; just different ways of justifying their jobs to taxpayers. and nothing new. i assumed everybody already knew that.

and it still doesn't excuse these losers from going along with it. wanting to blow up a bridge and kill people is a little different than wanting to buy or sell drugs, turn a trick, or any of the other things dirty cops normally entrap people with. at the very least they have a solid attempted murder case, and the conspiracy to commit aspect more or less guarantees they all get about ten years before they're even considered for parole. then there's whatever homeland security wants to tag on that, and they'll be lucky if they get out before their hair is grey. they be fucked.
