I don't know enough about obscure sciences to be too into hard sci-fi, but I love pop/modern sci-fi and fantasy. Loved War of The Worlds. I like a lot of Stephen King, too, but I'm not sure if you'd consider him fantasy. As far as shows go... X-Files and LOST are a given, but I also like The Outer Limits, MST3000, and Dr. Who. There's way too many movies to list. Got any good book suggestions? I watch too much TV.

They were on TV forever, but I completely passed the Stargate series by until they were all off the air. They all have their moments, but Universe achieved greatness - it was serious, dramatic, and avoided cheesiness, which is almost never accomplished in sci-fi television.

As far as books go, what do you like? The field is so huge that some parameters would help.

General recommendations from old masters and newjacks include Dan Simmons' Hyperion and Endymion books (four total), Asimov's Nightfall (either the expanded collaborative novel or the original novella), and Paolo Baciagalupi's The Windup Girl and his short story collection.

I am a Star Trek geek. All series except Enterprise were awesome.

Have you seen the third series? I'll freely admit that the first two Stargate series could be goofy.

That's awesome. Who's gonna be there?

Enterprise ruled. The first two seasons were kinda shitty, but that's true for almost every Star Trek series. They got new writers for seasons 3 and 4, and you can tell. They were pretty amazing.

Sci-fi shows I love:
All Star Trek (especially Deep Space Nine)
Doctor Who
Battlestar Galactica (the newer one)
Firefly (and the movie Serenity)
Futurama
The Twilight Zone
Lost
The X-Files

Sci-fi movies I love:
All Star Trek movies except The Final Frontier, though that one kinda rules because it's so bad.
Alien(s)
Event Horizon
Sunshine
The Fifth Element
Stargate
Twelve Monkeys
Moon
The Thing
The Fly (I've only seen the awesome Jeff Goldblum version)
Gattaca
The Fountain
Starship Troopers

Shows I haven't seen, but want to:
Stargate (all of them)
Farscape (watched the first few episodes, seems like it has potential, and it's been recommended)
Babylon 5

Haven't read too many sci-fi books. Basically just a bunch of Bradbury and HG Wells. Good stuff though.

I'm forgetting a ton of stuff.

lol Futurama is a great choice - it's easy to just watch it as a comedy cartoon, but it plays on genre tropes to the extent that it's intended audience has to be hardcore sci-fi dorks.

I'm much more of a fantasy guy, but I've been wanting to get into SciFi for a while, but just never really knew where to start because the genre is so vast that it's a little overwhelming.

Check out the book Perdido Street Station by China Mieville (came out sometime in the 90s). I guess it's technically 'steampunk' but I would call it a good fantasy/sci-fi crossover.

I love sci-fi, but generally can't deal with it on tv. If the effects are shitty (which they usually are), it bugs me to the point that I can't take it seriously.

If you haven't played them, the Mass Effect series is damn near perfect sci-fi (aside from the fairly shitty ending).

The best sci fi/fantasy crossover ever is Star Wars.

Warhammer 40k is the closest I've come to really scratching the surface of Sci-Fi.. if that is even considered sci-fi?
