serious question here

Listening to a talk radio program that i enjoy, the subject has come up multiple times of women breast feeding in public and what the different people's reactions are to the act. Scenarios include such things as at a nice eating place, on the subway, etc. Not just like at the mall or whatever, but real situations where women will feel no qualm about nursing right in public, with people right there with you. I personally fall into the percentage who think that it should be a matter you excuse yourself for. Unlike some people, i don't view it as sexual (because of the exposed and lovely breast) or really gross, but just something that if i were doing, i'd excuse myself just to be more appropriate. Maybe that's me though, i tend to be very conservative.

I figured i'd bring this to the bitch batch and all PAHC ladies for discussion, i can kind of see where this will go, but find it interesting to ponder from a woman's perspective since i've already heard what a group of men think.

It doesn't really bother me if others do it, but I will probably excuse myself. I wouldn't want some creep starring at me.

There have only been certain circumstances where I have felt uncomfortable breastfeeding. I will do it just about anywhere, but prefer a cover or blanket. The only time I don't cover up is if it's just me and family, or me and close girlfriends. I think it's so shitty to think that a woman should excuse herself though, in some places... If you are at a restaurant, should she go sit on a toilet with the baby?

a mother should be able to feed her child whenever and wherever she needs to and people who are uncomfortable should deal with it.

i'd much rather a woman breast feed her kid in public than have to listen to it cry.

I love when people, especially other parents, categorize breastfeeding as something inappropriate... particularly for their kid/s to see.

It's so completely natural, and although maybe not 'beautiful' to some, still something that should never be looked upon as out of the norm. The image that society has helped create for breastfeeding is shameful and ugly. I'd also like to point out, that while an infant is properly positioned, you don't get anything but side boob. I've flashed more than that while inebriated.

completely natural yes, but in a hypersensitive society built to be comfortable with being completely unnatural you have to expect that people might be skeeved by the sight of breast feeding. someone as good looking as tristian breast feeding at the mall discreetly would piss off the same people who would freak out over beat up Janet Jackson's weird nip slip at the super bowl. keep in mind people freaked out and were trying to sue saying their children's lives were ruined, etc.

if i were a mom, would i go to the bathroom? i wouldn't go out to the car that's for sure. But i would also probably not be going to a 5 star joint with a baby. As for the mall or somewhere similar i would look for somewhere private. Not for any reason other than it's a private moment, gawking and whatnot is to be expected and should be kept to a minimum.
