Come on, Norseman. Certain people would be offended if we declare English the official language.

The sad thing is that we've reached that point. Immigrants from generations past came to this country and assimilated, and made sure they and their children learned English.

Now we have Dora the Explorer providing bilingual education to pre-schoolers and an influx of illegal and legal immigrants who just don't care to become part of America.

which is utter crap, but i know that you two know that.

i'm obviously not for english as an official language because i hate languages. i have studied more in languages and linguistics than anyone on this board, but it will get very tough to keep our country as a de facto english-speaking nation if we don't fix it.

our situation is similar to that of germany right now with turkish, and german IS the official language. immigrants still think they don't have to learn the language of the country they move to and it's downright ridiculous. our problem is that we can't even enforce the language until it is official. right now there is no legal standard saying that, for instance, spanish-speakers can't protest and petition for state-funded spanish-speaking schools.

You're preaching to the choir here. I wouldn't be offended and I would vote for English as the official language of the USA any day.

We actually should be calling it american language. I remember we had american language books in school. Our language isn't exactly the same as the language in Enland, so why call it english.

^ all i can do is shake my head at that.

take a course in linguistics and come back. you have no point.

anyway, i'm concerned about the fact that no candidates for the upcoming election have anything to say about this, as far as i've seen.
