the show was only supposed to be like one season or whatever but it got immensely popular but everyone had figured out that they were in purgatory, which was clearly what was supposed to be what happened. So instead they just made up shit as they went along and didnt explain 95% of it because it could not be explained without inconsistencies. any of us could have been writers on this show.
and at the end decided they were still dead anyway

the thing is, you couldn't tell how lame the last season actually was until the last episode 'explained it'. up until then, they could have been showing a parallel universe that was leaking through or something else sci-fi-ish, which would have been fine.

religion and mythology explained by sci-fi is always kind of cool in a tv show; sci-fi explained by religion, not so much, and that's where they went with it, and that's why it's fatally lame and unwatchable in repeats for me. if they had just ended it sopranos-style with the episode-before-the-last or something, with no explanation, it would have been epic and i'd want to own the box set and rewatch every detail. instead, i feel like they somehow managed to materialize human feces onto the surface of my brain, and just seeing the commercials makes me kind of ill.

i guess all along, i was thinking like this
