My mom and gmom both smoked weed but I didn't know till I went thru my moms room when I was 14. At that point I put the pieces together, pinched my moms bag and sold it at school. My mom found weed in my room when I was 15 she grounded me for the weekend. A month later she caught me smoking cigarettes and grounded me for 3months with the reasoning that cigarettes kill you and weed doesn't. Today I don't smoke weed but I smoke cigarettes. So I guess the grounding didn't help but neither did my mom smoking cigarettes in the house. I bought my mom weed when she was going through chemotherapy and even then she really didn't want me buying it cause of the parent/child relationship.

Being upfront with your kids is the best idea. But you have to give them the whole picture. Weed is most certainly a gateway drug. If your going to explain weed you have to explain the rest of the drugs as well. Very little people try other drugs before weed.

it compounds how old and lame i feel. every once in a while we'll dip into the weed stash we have in the house but we wait until the kids are either asleep or we have a sitter for the night. i don't want my kids to see me drunk or high. i don't think it would be the end of the world or anything i'm just not comfortable with doing it.

Do whatever you want as a parent, but it's your responsibility to do a really good job hiding it from you kids until they're old enough to understand it. I don't care what you think, sitting your child down at 12 and explaining to them why you smoke pot is not doing them any favors.

I never even saw my parents drunk until I was well into my teens, but by now I've learned a horrifying amount of what was going on while I was dumbly playing with my Playmobils (mostly from going shot-for-shot with my dad) including that my sister was conceived why my parents were on mushrooms.

I'm going to force weed into the faces of test animals if PETA makes it illegal to test cigarettes on them.

The problem is that in PA it's a schedule 1 drug and having it around children is frowned upon by courts. You can have whatever opinion you want on if it should be legal but it's not now. Also, being high/drunk while being responsible for a child is also frowned upon and either could lead to the child being taken away.

It bothers me that people compare being stoned/being drunk.

Exactly. If it's that important to you, then do it but it's definitely in your best interest to hide it from them very well.

I never saw my parents high or drunk with the exception of one time that I walked in on my mom cutting up a pile of coke. For some reason that surpressed memory came back to me when I was much older and I went "wait a minute?" (but that's a different story). I found out later that while I never saw anything going on, both of my parents have since admitted some of the horrible shit they had tried when they were younger and after having both me and my sister.

A little off topic but:
A government-sponsored study published this month in The Open Neurology Journal concludes that marijuana provides much-needed relief to some chronic pain sufferers and that more clinical trials are desperately needed, utterly destroying the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) classification of the drug as having no medical uses.

While numerous prior studies have shown marijuana’s usefulness for a host of medical conditions, none have ever gone directly at the DEA’s placement of marijuana atop the schedule of controlled substances. This study, sponsored by the State of California and conducted at the University of California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research, does precisely that, driving a stake into the heart of America’s continued war on marijuana users by calling the Schedule I placement simply “not accurate” and “not tenable.”

Reacting to the study, Paul Armentano, director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), told Raw Story that the study clearly proves U.S. drug policy “is neither based upon nor guided by science.”
