If I'm defensive, it's because I just think its unfair to assume he is gay because of this choice (and you are right, to proceed with the treatment is a choice). Like I said, I just fail to see then connection between the chemical balances or imbalances in someone that make them feel they should or shouldn't be the sex they were born and sexual orientation.
and i'm just saying that maybe those feelings should be treated psychologically before invasive medical procedures are considered. it used to be that everyone jumped to take a pill to solve their problems, now it seems like people are rushing into much more invasive procedures before exhausting all other options. maybe part of life is accepting that nothing is ever 'perfect', whatever that means. like i said, it's probably too early in the morning for this discussion.

The desire to be of a different sex is not indication of hetero or homosexuality. To assume that is ignorant.
i know that's what some people say these days, but i'm not sure that opinion will stand the bullshit-test of time.
pop psychology is another accepted horrorshow. the dsm just got rewritten and a bunch of practicing psychologists are also suddenly ignorant.

i work at a legal clinic serving transpeople. nothing you have said anywhere even comes close to reflecting reality. there is no debate as to whether gender identity and sexual orientation are mutually determinant. its a simple fact that theyre not. you also woefully fail to grasp the social imapct of the versions of the dsm it seems

I think I'm a straight woman trapped in a man's body, but that doesn't mean I'm queer or nothing.
