Aren't they playing a handful of shows with Marduk? Are they playing this? If so, I'd come out for them.

Promoters who make bands sell tickets are terrible promoters.

Marduk is not on this show, wish they were! But then again, the ticket price probably wouldnt be $13. Dean i disagree with you, and we have been doing this a LONG time. Promoters that make bands sell tickets for local shows or whatever, i understand your point....but if they are bringing in big ticket events and putting themselves out there for the $$$, bands need to help out by selling tickets. Its not that they make you, you dont have to play the show if you cant move the tickets. Only bands that cant move tickets, bitch about selling them.

Upon looking it up, Marduk is with them the day before in Brooklyn, but is there last date together. The other shows are in Canada and then Midwest...

On the contrary I could say only promoters who don't know how to get people to their events, or put together good line ups ask bands to sell tickets.

Bands should flyer, and promote the event. NOT SELL TICKETS.

The promoter should be doing twice the amount of work as bands to get people at the show. Not relying on giant line ups and pre-sales to cover costs. If you don't think the show will work, don't book it.

I pretty much avoid going to shows that are ran like that, because I refuse to support the practice. I know A LOT of people who feel the same way.

It's ultimately the job of the promoter to curate good line ups.

If you get bands to sell tickets, you're not really helping anyone out. You're just getting bands desperate enough for shows to bother their friends who don't even care about the other bands to buy tickets.

Bands selling tickets, is like a band asking the promoter to play an instrument.

We shall agree to disagree then, we arent desperate for shows, we dont have to drag people out. The way i look at it is.....You be the promoter, on the hook for $1500 to Aura Noir or whoever else. You put my band on the show, but dont ask us to sell tickets. For whatever reason, 7 heads come through the door for us. That isnt going to help pay the bigger band. My band walks out having played the show and dont have to worry about the big nut on the table for the promoter.... If the bands arent selling tickets, they can skate away without doing any promoting or being responsible for the head count themselves...basically what you are saying, but in reverse. For big shows to be successful, bands and promoters need to work together.

We take shows that we know it will be easy tp get rid of tickets to, i.e. Devourment, Grave, Aura Noir, Fetus, etc....sell as many as we can and make our piece of the pie. Works out well for everyone. And we do not deal with promoters who dont do their side of the work.

Well if I was booking a $1500 band I'd A)Hope the bar sales contributed on top of the door and B)I'd only put on bands that made sense. I'd have enough confidence in myself to not force pre-sales. If you're a promoter, as a business and not a hobby, Losses are to be assumed. You make up for it with other shows.

Do what works for you guys to play shows, but I still call bullshit on the promoters part. I haven't seen anyone handing out flyers for any Mojo 13 shows ever I think. Maybe the troc which is usually full of people who don't support local music, but never at smaller shows where people actually care about music.

But never the less, the last two big shows at Mojo - Cattle with Devourment, and Fetus were both sold out, 250+ (max head count supposed to be 225). So shit is flowing to that place, and they will continue to get more big time bands playing there. I personally am not big on paper fliers myself anymore, people more into online invites and shit it seems.

Id have to find out about the bar part, that definitely would help out the cause. Not sure if a bar would be willing to give up their sales, unless they are charging the promoter a fee to use the joint for the show.

And obviously, they are not the only shows we play, we play a ton of shows year round. I just understand both sides of the show aspect and dont mind selling tix when it makes sense.

Facebook is easier, but less personal.

I'd rather talk to people in person, and meet people who actually give a fuck then mass invite my graduating class who listen to top 40 hits, and buy single songs off itunes

If the shows are selling out, I don't see why they need bands to sell tickets.

I'll also add that I'm actually kind of fascinated that your band is successful at this. the promoters who you go through must be a lot less shitty than most of the people I've seen do this, especially around Baltimore. I've seen bands get royally fucked to hell on deals like this. for example, the promoter will front the bands X amount of tickets promising they can keep the money if they sell out, then if the band comes on the last day and says "hey we didn't sell all of them", and the promoter turns around and says "oh yeah? well that's my money then, and you are also responsible for the unsold tickets, pay up or you don't play and I'll make sure nobody I know ever books you again"

If someone said "Thats my money then and you can't play". They'd be salty when I kept the money. Sounds awful.
