probably can get a better sound out of the 5150 with not using the hi gain and running a pedal in front though. i know some people do that well.

I actually had a Maxon OD808 that I used to run in front of my JCM900... but I was never happy with how it sculpted the 5150's tone, regardless of the gain setting. It just made it too harsh and shrill.

I'm open to trying an OD pedal again, but that one just didn't work for me. I paid $40 for it and sold it for $100, so I'm ok with that. Haha.

does your 5150 have two channels or one? if it has one, is there like a gain button or anything?

Similar to what oprah is saying, i had the 5150 II and would play out of channel one. Gain all the way up, treble all the way down, bass all the way up, and used a tubescreamer or blues driver only for signal boost

2 channel.

I play on the lead channel with the gain on about 5. Its plenty of gain for me, for what my band does. Lows and Highs on around 7 or 8. Mids on around 5.

Its really fine for what I'm doing now, but I just want a little more versatility.

i was considering using a tube screamer for signal boost through my marshall valvestate 100v...

leads get lost and i need to boost the volume for them to blend.

will this work?

got ya, i saw u were trying to achieve something with less gain. i used to go with that channel one set up for a more standard rock tone, a little more dry and crisp as opposed to the saturated gain in channel 2. didn't sound good with active pickups though.

yeah, those marshall VS heads really aren't bad. i had one as a backup for years and out of the right cab they can sound good.

the tubescreamer/bues driver is traditionally used to signal boost and/or overdrive your amp a little. can also be used tightening the low end etc.

if you just want a plain volume boost, turn the gain on pedal down, and just turn they level/volume knob up. same thing can also be achieved with an EQ pedal.

could also be used to add more flavor with another gain stage.

scooping the mids will hurt the way your guitar cuts live.

i hate the beta bass. literally hate it. concert bass i had was okay but nothing really far out. by the time they got into the solid state stuff, tonality wise they'd gone out the window. few sunns i have left on my list are the one that the nuge used "sunn enforcer", just to have it. that and i really want a red faced model t. weird that they're both later year models and here i am bitching about company sales and whatnot, but im way happy with the "corvette of the 60's sunn line" 1200s. you can get such sick tube amps for like 550 and lately i've known the betas to be climbing in price due to demand. you're cheating yourself by not going for a 50 watt sonaro/sorado.

sounds wack, but it's been on my chest for a while, moreso coming from the b9.

i agree that they're overpriced now. i don't have any sunn amps anymore. i sold off the sunn 200s because it's quiet. sounded great though. replaced it with the sunn/fender 300T.

we'll be in philly in july. i'll make sure to let you know dude!
